I didn't know where to turn. I couldn't afford a loan, and the repairs were beyond what I could manage on my own.

Preserving a Family Legacy: Eddie Sulton's Story
For Eddie Sulton, home is more than a house—it's his family's legacy.
Generations ago, Eddie's grandfather gifted land to each of his children. In the 1960s, Eddie's father built the family home, creating a place filled with memories, hard work, and pride. But as the years passed, the home required major repairs that Eddie simply couldn't afford on a limited income.
"I didn't know where to turn," Eddie recalls. "The repairs were beyond what I could manage on my own."
Everything changed when he connected with the Financial Wellness Institute (FWI). Working with President & CEO Wanda Hardy and FWI's housing preservation program, Eddie received the guidance and support needed to secure critical home rehabilitation assistance.
More than $51,000 in improvements transformed the property, including a new roof, energy-efficient windows, vinyl siding, gutters, porch, accessibility improvements, and a new 400-foot well that restored a safe, reliable water supply. Eddie also contributed countless hours of his own labor, completing insulation, drywall, and interior improvements himself.
"This house means everything to me," Eddie says. "It's my father's legacy. Being able to preserve it means more than I can put into words."
Today, Eddie's home is safer, stronger, and ready to serve future generations. He credits FWI not only with helping restore his home, but with giving him hope.
"Don't give up," Eddie encourages others. "The Financial Wellness Institute truly cares about helping people and families. They helped change my life."
Eddie's story is a reminder that preserving a home is about more than repairs—it's about preserving family, creating stability, and protecting a legacy for generations to come.
