FWI enforced the value of credit to me. I will take this into the future with me, and share it with my son.

Leona's Story

When You Fall Down, You Get Up.

Inspired to build a better life for herself and her two teenage sons, Leona Rouse lives by a simple motto: “When you fall down, you get up. You don’t stay down.”

Two years ago, a housing authority employee connected Leona with the Financial Wellness Institute (FWI). That referral set her on a new path toward her dream of becoming a homeowner.

Leona began breaking that dream into achievable steps. With FWI's guidance, she learned how to review her credit report, identify issues, communicate with creditors, and take action to strengthen her credit.

“Miss Wanda emphasized patience. She said it takes time to raise my credit score,” Rouse said. “And now, that time is here.”

FWI also helped Leona develop a budget and establish a dedicated savings account for her future home. She started by putting away just $10 at a time. Over time, those small steps added up—giving her enough savings to cover settlement costs.

The lessons extended beyond homeownership. Leona learned how to write checks, use a check register, track her spending, and avoid unnecessary money-order fees. She also opened her first credit card to begin establishing a stronger credit history.

“When they called and told me I was approved for a credit card I just didn’t know what to do, I was so happy,” Rouse said.

Leona's progress has given her more than improved financial skills. It has given her confidence in what she can accomplish.

“Miss Wanda gave me strength and courage. She isn’t only a teacher, she’s a friend,” Rouse continued.

Today, Leona continues saving and preparing to purchase her first home. Her goal is to remain in the Woodbury area so her sons can stay in the same school through graduation. She has also referred a friend to FWI, sharing the support that helped her move forward.

How FWI Helped

FWI helped Leona turn homeownership from a long-term dream into an achievable plan. Through credit education, budgeting and savings guidance, financial coaching, and practical money-management tools, FWI helped her address credit challenges, build savings, establish credit, and prepare for the costs of purchasing a home.

By breaking the process into manageable steps, FWI helped Leona build the knowledge and financial confidence to keep moving toward her goal.

Small Steps. Big Progress.

Leona's story shows that with patience, persistence, and the right guidance, getting back up can be the first step toward a stronger future.
