FWI taught me to say, Yes, you can. You can definitely afford, you have to want it.

Marvea's Story

She Wouldn't Pack a Box Until the Keys Were in Her Hand.

For nearly seven years, Marvea Taylor dreamed of becoming a homeowner. But she wasn't ready to celebrate until it was official.

“I was nervous,” Ms. Taylor says. “I didn’t want to get my hopes up.”

That changed at the settlement table, with her 17-year-old daughter beside her capturing the moment on camera. Marvea was officially a first-time homeowner through the Financial Wellness Institute (FWI) and the USDA Self-Help Housing Purchase Repair Program.

“When I walked in that house for the first time, I said ‘Thank you, Jesus!’ That was my ‘a-ha’ moment. We did it … let’s go!”

And go she did.

Marvea immediately began making the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Gloucester County condo her own—painting the walls, replacing flooring, and envisioning a modern farmhouse-inspired living space. With more room than their former rental, the home also gives her daughter, their dog, and their cat a place to grow and thrive.

For Marvea, homeownership is about more than having a place of her own. It's about independence, responsibility, and showing her daughter what determination can accomplish.

“I don’t got to wait and ask nobody. This is mine and I can do what I want!”

About a year before purchasing her home, Marvea decided it was time to get serious about her goal. Through FWI, she focused on improving her credit and strengthening her financial knowledge through financial wellness classes.

The experience changed how she thought about credit.

“At first I was like, ‘I’m gonna just pay someone to improve my credit for me.’ Then Ms. Wanda told me, ‘Why spend your money doing that when you can instead put that money toward fixing your credit itself?’ It made sense, and that’s what I did.”

Today, Marvea wants other working New Jersey residents to know that homeownership can be within reach.

“Yes, you can,” she says. “You can definitely afford it. You have to commit to it, really want it, and say: just give me the chance.”

Now, just months into homeownership, Marvea is enjoying the process of making the space her own—from her daughter's pink-and-gray bathroom plans to Pinterest-inspired decorating ideas and dreams of welcoming friends and family.

How FWI Helped

FWI helped Marvea turn a long-held homeownership goal into a reality. Through financial wellness education, credit improvement guidance, homebuyer preparation, and access to the USDA Self-Help Housing Purchase Repair Program, FWI helped her strengthen her financial foundation and navigate the path to homeownership.

FWI's support gave Marvea the knowledge, resources, and confidence to take control of her finances and pursue a home she could proudly call her own.
